A leather steering wheel cover is touched every time you drive, so it picks up sweat, hand cream and dust faster than any other part of the interior. A few minutes of care now and then keeps the leather soft, clean and grippy for years.

Every week or two

Wipe the rim with a soft microfibre cloth, slightly damp with clean water. Wring it out well - the leather should never get wet through. Dry it straight away with a second cloth.

Every month or two

Clean with a pH-neutral leather cleaner. Put a little on the cloth, not on the leather, work it in gently and wipe off. For perforated leather, use a soft brush so the cleaner does not settle in the holes.

Two or three times a year

Apply a thin layer of leather conditioner, let it soak in and buff off any excess. Too much conditioner leaves the wheel slippery, so less is more.

What to avoid

Household sprays, kitchen wipes, alcohol, hand sanitiser and solvents dry out leather and can strip the colour. Avoid silicone shine products - they make the wheel slippery. Hand cream and sanitiser on your hands end up on the wheel, so give them a minute to dry before you drive.

Sun and heat

Strong sun fades and dries leather. A windscreen sun shade helps in summer. If the cover gets wet, let it dry naturally - never with a heater or hair dryer.
