Few cars turn heads like a Bond Bug. The wedge shape, the lift-up canopy and that bright orange paint make it one of the most recognisable British microcars of the 1970s. So when an owner asked us for a steering wheel cover, orange leather was the obvious choice – it picks up the colour of the bodywork and the dashboard, and makes the small wheel feel properly finished.

The owner sent us this photo after fitting the cover, together with a short review: 'Excellent quality, perfect fit, excellent comms. I'm delighted. Thoroughly recommended.' Customer photo, used with permission. Thank you – it is always good to see a cover back in the car it was made for.

Why a cover on a classic?

Original wheels on cars of this age are often hard, cracked or worn smooth. A leather cover gives a softer, warmer grip without changing the wheel itself, and it can be taken off later if you want to return the car to standard. On a car as small as the Bug, where the wheel is right in front of you and in every photo, the colour makes a real difference.

How it fits

The cover arrives cut to the shape of the wheel, with the edges already stitched. You put it on with the joint at the bottom, then lace the two edges together by passing the thread under the loops of the existing stitching. You never push the needle through the leather, so there is nothing to punch and no glue. Most people take about an hour. Step-by-step instructions and the fitting video are on our fitting page.

Check your size

Classic wheels vary a lot, even within one model. Before you order, measure the diameter of the wheel and the circumference of the grip – it takes two minutes with a tape measure: how to measure.

Looking after the leather

A classic often spends long weeks in a garage or under a cover. Wipe the leather with a slightly damp cloth now and then, let it dry naturally and use a leather conditioner two or three times a year. If the car is kept outside, a windscreen shade protects both the leather and the dashboard from strong sun.
