A campervan wheel works harder than most. Long motorway runs to the coast, slow lanes in the hills, and hours of steering on the way to the next pitch. On a Fiat Ducato 244 (2002–06) the original wheel rim is often worn shiny by now, and on cold mornings it is not pleasant to hold.

This cover is black perforated leather with dark grey thread. The perforation helps with grip and keeps your hands cooler on long summer drives. The darker thread blends with the Ducato's grey dashboard, so it looks like it came from the factory. If you prefer a smooth finish or a different thread colour, the same cover is made in other leathers too – the colour chart is on each product page.

How it fits

The cover arrives cut to the shape of the wheel, with the edges already stitched. You put it on the wheel with the joint at the bottom, then lace the two edges together by passing the thread under the loops of the existing stitching. You never push the needle through the leather, so there is nothing to punch and no glue. Most people take about an hour. Our step-by-step instructions and the fitting video are on the fitting page.

Check your size

Ducato wheels changed between generations. Before you order, measure the diameter of the wheel and the circumference of the grip – it takes two minutes with a tape measure: see our measuring guide.

Looking after the leather

A campervan spends long weeks parked in sun or damp. Wipe the cover with a slightly damp cloth now and then, let it dry naturally and use a leather conditioner two or three times a year. Keep a windscreen shade up when the van is parked in strong sun – it protects the leather and the dashboard. More tips: leather care guide.

Laying up for winter?

If the van is going into storage, it is a good time to fit a new cover: the wheel is clean, you have time, and it will be ready for the first trip in spring. Fitting is easiest in a warm room or a heated garage: slightly warm leather is softer and the edges close together more easily. Take your time on the first section, and the rest of the wheel will go much faster.
